Fractal mass–size scaling of wetting soil aggregates

چکیده
Structure is an important factor of soil functioning in ecosystems. Soil aggregate size distributions are commonly used to characterize soil structure. Relationships between density of dry soil aggregates and aggregate size present a different way to use aggregate-related information in soil structure characterization. Those relationships have been simulated assuming soils to be mass fractals. Aggregates in field soil are not air-dry. The relationships between mass and size differ between dry aggregates and wet aggregates because aggregates shrink as water content decreases. Our objective was to find out whether the mass fractal model can be applied to wet aggregates. Aggregates from the plow layer of Greyzem soil were brought to four different levels of water contents, and the kerosene method was used to measure volume of aggregates within diameter ranges of 3–5, 5–7, and 7–10 mm. It appeared that the wetter aggregates were less prone to loosening as the water increased. The mass fractal model was applicable to wet aggregates under the assumption of linear dependence of the fractal dimension Dm and the unit size aggregate mass a on the gravimetric water content w (g g−1). Dependencies Dm = 2.925 + 0.284w and a = 0.808 − 0.123w resulted in R2 = 0.9999 for the regression line of simulated versus measured aggregate mass. Fractal modeling of mass–size scaling in wet soil aggregates presents a set of aggregate-based parameters for soil structure that may reflect soil properties and can be explored as an index of soil ability to support functions of ecosystems. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Scaling and Fractal Concepts in Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: Comparison of Some Models
Measurement of soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, is normally affected by flow patterns such as macro pore; however, most current techniques do not differentiate flow types, causing major problems in describing water and chemical flows within the soil matrix. This study compares eight models for scaling Ks and predicted matrix and macro pore Ks, using a database composed of 50 datasets...
متن کاملFractal Geometry and Geostatistics for describing the Field Variability of Soil Aggregation
Fractal geometry has become a widely accepted descriptive tool for speci"c physical properties of natural soils and fractal scaling has recently been proposed as a model for soil particle size distribution. In this work, the cumulative mass distribution of dry soil aggregates, M(r(R), was estimated and shown to be proportional to R3D, where r is the aggregate size, R is a speci"c measuring scal...
متن کاملDetermination of branch fraction and minimum dimension of mass-fractal aggregates.
Particles of micrometer to nanometer size often aggregate to form branched structures. Such materials include metals and metal oxides as well as biological and polymeric materials (considering the persistence length as a primary unit). Characterization of such structures is difficult since they typically display disordered, irregular features in three dimensions. Branched aggregates display two...
متن کاملDynamics of Aggregate Stability under Drying and Wetting Cycles for Yellow Soil in China
Soil aggregate stability is an essential soil property, influencing many soil behaviors. However, the relationships between drying and wetting cycles and aggregate stability dynamics with different initial aggregate size classes have not been clarified. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of drying and wetting cycles on aggregate stability under different breakdown mechanisms, a...

Abstract: Ridge culture is a special conservation tillage method, but the long-term influence of this tillage system on soil aggregate-size stability in paddy fields is largely unknown in southwest of china. The objectives of this paper are to evaluate soil aggregates stability and to determine the relationship between SOC and soil aggregate stability.Soil samples at 0-20 cm layer were adopted ...
